“If you get good some place, get out of there and go to the next place.” - Jay Leno
2:30 if you've ever observed comedians talking to each other when no one else is around, this makes a lot of sense.
man i hate Jay Leno
Dave's ego won't let him go away
Nice to see Jay Leno has always been unfunny. Consistency.
cringy
“I think low self-esteem helps you get ahead” amazing.
Jay is still such a tool and Letterman is still a genius.
Nice work by Comedy Central staying relevant, this is good content.

Jay Leno will always be remembered as the dude that screwed over the greatest talk show host of the 21st century, "Conan O'Brien." My generation will make sure of that. Also David Letterman is chill.

Stop blaming Leno for Conan's sh!tty Tonight Show ratings. This was in 2010. Get over it! Conan got $40 million when he left NBC. Conan is now with TBS and everything is fine now. Jay did what the network asked him to do. Remember also, it was not just about Leno, 165 other staff involved on his show too could have lost their jobs. The Tonight Show is owned by NBC, not Jay or Conan.
How these 2 over hyped uninspired "comedians" had this long of a run is beyond me. Especially Leno. Who the fuck gave this man a show?
Why does Leno look like he'd come in second for a leno lookalike contest
In the thumbnail jay Leno looks like someone disguised as Jay Leno
Dude this is an iconic video. Two of the greatest stand ups and late night and tonight show hosts ever
Ive ALWAYS been a Letterman fan. I was SUPER PISSED Jay took over. I hate him his style and his big head. Pun intended
Jay's head is growing at the same pace as Letterman's beard🤯
Jay is one of the greatest ones to do it I see him as one of my mentors

Leno was funny on the early Letterman show
Mister Jay Leno You are my hero in many ways, thank you Sir👍🏻.
These two were on top of their game in the 80s. Letterman was that smart-aleck guy, who had a remark to just about everything that happens. He had a retort to everyone and every situation. Leno was not a wordsmith like Letterman, but he is a confident storyteller. His material/humor is very lower-middle class and typical American that it is hard not to relate. That's how I would summarize their styles respectively

@Light Myst In 2004, it was Conan who had all the power. He could've had a show at an earlier hour over at ABC or FOX, but instead he decided to accept NBC's proposal to drop Jay at the end of his contract because they knew Conan would only stay if they gave him "The Tonight Show." Years later, when it was Jay who was about to leave for another network, NBC talked him into the prime time show, and that, too, turned out to be a bad idea. Then, when they wanted him to do 30 minutes at 11:35pm, Jay asked if he could get out of his contract. NBC told him no. So he did not have all the power. The whole mess was NBC's fault.

@kbrock 9146 Conan did a great job hosting The Tonight Show, but he's not the perfect fit for the show. Jimmy Fallon is a better fit. Conan's current show on TBS is a perfect fit for him.
It's easy to hate on Leno now because of his success and corny humor when he had The Tonight Show, but it's important to remember that he had the respect of his peers. David Letterman proclaimed him the funniest at The Store then; I remember Seinfeld also saying as much on The Howard Stern Show once (probably much to Howard's chagrin).
yes?
3 muaj më parë
@Aron Crillco Well there you have it! But in the interest of one-upping your contrarianism: Howard was still absolutely chagrinned when Jerry proclaimed Leno "the funniest."

@bargh70 "That respect of his peers could've been fear of him backstabbing you." I love the idea of innocuous Jay Leno sending young lads into hysteria. Thanks for the laugh. For the record, I care not one iota for any late night host (except Dick Cavett) - they're all bland to me. In case you haven't seen the video, Letterman sings Leno's praises in a contemporary setting, negating your paranoid hypothetical situation. *edit because of weird ALboth error

Throughout his career he's shown that he's a dirty conniving rat bastard. That "respect of his peers" could've been fear of him backstabbing you. None of that shit makes you a funnier comedian. I don't know anyone from my generation that remotely considers Leno funny.
Letterman should sock him right in his big jaw
Jay Leno.....still not funny, just easily digestible for a mass audience like Fallon

Am I the only one who thinks Jay Leno made a deal with the devil to get where he got considering he is not funny? Edit: considering he was a super cheese ball at the job of hosting the Tonight Show, in my opinion. Super cringe.

3 muaj më parë
@Evan AB Bothered? No. But I'm kinda amused at how invested you are in the long dead late night wars. One note: this is a clip from the new docuseries about The Comedy Store, it's not the "let's celebrate Leno's career" show: Letterman didn't have to say anything about Leno, or he could have been more vague about his impact, but he chose to proclaim him the funniest at the store because that's truly how he felt. Letterman said as much a couple of years ago when he was on Comedians in Cars with Jerry Seinfeld. Two more notes: Leno was the regular substitute host for Carson in the late eighties and early nineties; evidently he always "killed." Leno was also a frequent guest on Late Night with David Letterman. I never cared about any late night host (except Dick Cavett). They were all bland to me, and Letterman was more snide than clever.
Evan AB
3 muaj më parë
@yes? Well, maybe he used to be funny and then got the Tonight Show and that some how (maybe the censors or people in charge) made him have to change his style? I don't know, all I know is that I saw him on his show throughout his career and I felt he came across as a huge twat. Letterman, who was actually funny while interviewing guests etc, was passed over for the position of host of the Tonight Show. Letterman's show came on after the Tonight Show, for years while Jonny Carson was the host of the Tonight Show in the more prime time slot. So one would think that when Carson retired, Letterman who had proven that he was really good at the job should've been Carson's successor. Also, I find it interesting that when Letterman is asked for his thoughts on Leno he talks about how Leno's used to be hilarious when he was doing stand up. As Letterman has integrity and wasn't just going to come out and say Leno was not funny as host. This is my opinion having grown up through the Late night tv host wars. I know Letterman was bitter (and he should have been), and the evidence for that is that after Leno was officially the host of the Tonight Show, Letterman changed networks and was given the better more lucrative time spot on the new network. So I think to sum up Letterman wasn't going to slag off Leno on the "let's celebrate Leno's career" show. And he referred to Leno as having been the funniest, back when they were doing stand up in the clubs. Again this is my opinion as I mentioned in my initial comment. Sorry if it bothers you.
yes?
3 muaj më parë
How do you explain Letterman proclaiming Leno the funniest comic at The Store?
I always hated how Dave always was a mouth peice for Leno. Leno is piece of shit and not even funny at all. A guy as truly funny as Dave knows that he is funnier than Leno. He is just too nice to say it. It seems like Leno has something on him. Norm has been trying to get him to crack for decades.
You picked a pretty unfunny clip as your example
the jowl cheeks are thinning out the Leno chin.
Fuck. Thought this would be a batlle royale where they fight to the death
Yes! I miss "The Green Room" and I want more like this!
What's funny is while Leno started out by being a comedian, Letterman was a weatherman.. and actually.. funnier.
Jonathan

@Evan AB Leno had the biggest talk show in the country, if not the world. His monologue was written for the lowest common denominator. Even then, there were still a few jokes every night that were pretty good. But he could be very funny during interviews. (See his famous interview with Hugh Grant after his arrest for prostitution.) Letterman took the talk show to another level. He was the anti-talk show host. Instead of making the guest comfortable, he sometimes attacked the guest. He was ironic and post-modern, sarcastic, grumpy. He was more textured. He elevated the format to a higher art. (His interviews with Paris Hilton and Harvey Pekar are masterpieces.) But I have no doubt Leno was the better standup.
Evan AB
2 muaj më parë
@Jonathan Agreed! The person who was best at what they did the most (every week night during tv season) was hands down Letterman! Personally I've only seen Leno do stand up during his monologues. I remember feeling like he was so cringe... I don't ever remember thinking how funny and clever this man is. Whereas I might find myself laughing out loud while watching Leno. I will concede that it is possible Leno used to be a funny comic back when he did stand up at The Store...
Jonathan

Letterman had a funnier show, but he wasn’t the better comic. Easily the funnier host. But they’re both funny. He gave Conan the shaft and he’s funny. Both can be true.

Jay Leno the guy that had the same comedy set his whole career. That's why he never did a special he didn't want to lose his act. So I hear from podcasts with comedians that was pretty common back then.

It seems odd to me that Leno says he doesn't record comedy specials because then he could never tell those jokes again. At the same time he says you have to always be writing new jokes because what worked a year ago won't work anymore. I don't see why he doesn't do a special once a year to lay down all the dated jokes and keep the evergreens back for his act along with new stuff. The only thing he ever said on the subject that made sense to me as to why he doesn't record specials is because watching a comedy act on tv is like going to the club and looking at it through a window instead of going inside. He says there is a magic to being in the room that you can't replicate on tv.
Jay Leno is kind of inspiring.

All I remember about Jay Leno is that he screwed over Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel roasted Leno to his face over it... And then Conan turned around and screwed over George Lopez.
John Dinh Nguyen
3 muaj më parë
About Conan and George Lopez, it wasn't Conan's fault. Lopez is a jackass and a racist. Lopez said horrible things about Conan after his late-night talk show got cancelled. In an interview with Huffington Post Live, Lopez said he bitched for two years even though he got $40 million from NBC. Conan used that paycheck to pay his entire staff who are unemployed. Conan was just trying to be supportive, but Lopez is a jerk.
